Important FAQ"s

Generally, no. Most “Self-Drive” packages mean you drive your personal vehicle to a designated meeting point or the desert camp at the edge of the dunes. Once there, you switch to a professional driver in a modified 4×4 vehicles for the dune bashing. This is for safety, as navigating steep dunes requires specialized training and a vehicle with high clearance and roll cages.

If you are only driving your car to the desert meeting point, a standard driver’s license is all you need. However, if you book a specific Self-Drive Dune Buggy or Quad Bike experience, you will be given a safety briefing and a guide. No special off-road license is required for these, but you must follow the guide’s lead to stay safe.

The primary benefits are flexibility and cost.

  • Flexibility: You aren’t waiting for a driver to pick up 5 other people from different hotels, and you can leave the camp whenever you like.

  • Cost: These packages are usually significantly cheaper (often starting around 50–100 AED per person) because the tour company saves on transportation logistics.

Yes. Once you reach the camp (either by your own car or a short shuttle from the parking lot), you enjoy the same amenities as everyone else:

  • Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothes (linen or cotton) and bring a light jacket or sweater for the evening.

  • Footwear: Sandals or flip-flops are best for the sand, but sneakers are better if you plan on doing quad biking.

  • Essentials: Don’t forget your camera for the “Golden Hour” sunset and some cash for optional extras like falcon photos or souvenirs
